Conference of Western messages
Fatos Nano, caught off guard by a harsh accusation against the democratically led government, went on to assign part of the responsibility to the European Community. All the calculations of the PS chairman to present himself to the international factor in the guise of a moderate social democrat failed spectacularly, as analysts put it, without being able to explain anything at all. Nano also displayed a crushing offensive reminiscent of the past, from which he had shown no sign of moving away. It was a hall with a magnificent appearance, beautifully decorated with roses. It was the row of foreign diplomats, there to observe closely and learn what was happening in Albania, while all that remained to be seen was simply a session of ordinary opposition militants. Nano opened the meeting, also denouncing the BBC condemnations in the name of justice, but when it came down to it he inevitably ended up pushing toward confrontation over strengthening the country against anarchy. In the PS representation office, the accusation also began to circulate that Parliament had no right whatsoever to harmonize the election laws without his consent and that of those he called “international factors.” He even did not fail to ask what the foreign gentlemen were doing here among us. On the hall’s podium stood as many as 29 correspondents of the foreign press. Along with them, hundreds of others were watching, trying to extract as many hard and heavy words as possible. That same day, Mr. Nano held a conference with several foreign ambassadors. His speech, presented as a kind of political statement on the situation, had ultimatum-like tones toward the factors and the government. At the center of his concern was the democrats’ determination not to deviate from the path of the parliamentary elections of 26 May. He demanded that the country not be punished by those who would impose dangerous scenarios. Fatos Nano tried to remind the foreigners that Albania could not enter a situation of destabilization without consequences for the region. Yet the outcome of the whole conference resembled more an open pressure to block democratic processes than a measured analysis. On this occasion, the Socialist opposition again seemed to be returning to an agitated language rather than the language of compromise it tried to display in its meetings with the West.

Bullets and threats against the “RD” newsroom
After the newspaper was blocked by PS committees
On Saturday evening, the RD newsroom was hit by a hand grenade thrown by unidentified persons, causing minor material damage. The incident has been described as a terrorist act, while the armed persons controlling the city streets have made the normal circulation of the press impossible. At the same time, the newsroom has also received repeated threats. One of the newsroom leaders stated that the attack is linked to the attempt to prevent the newspaper from being published and that the perpetrators will be identified and punished. “Rilindja Demokratike” calls on state institutions to guarantee press freedom and the safety of journalists. In all districts where the PS committees operate, obstacles have been observed to the distribution of the newspaper and the movement of couriers. This climate of pressure is seen as part of a strategy to suffocate free speech and intimidate public opinion.
